They say that an Englishman’s favourite conversational topic is the weather, and given the Cumbrian climate there’s often plenty to talk about. For many the Lakeland winter brings out the best in its mountains. The onset of cold weather sees fewer people on the ridges and summits but those that you do meet are revelling in the experience, crampons on feet, axe in hand. Enthusiasts across the country study the weather charts, waiting for the right conditions that transform our mountains into a winter wonderland.
But if this sounds a little too strenuous, and you simply want to experience the peace and tranquillity of the Lakes in winter there are lots of low level walks which meander through woodlands, along lake shores and beneath impressive snow topped summits. These offer a flavour of this magical season and there is something for all abilities. Just wrap up warm, check the weather before setting off and make sure you have a map and compass should the weather turn!
Cumbria and the Lake District is home to some of the most famous walking routes in England. The Coast to Coast route often called C2C starts from the west coast and heads eastward through Alston, England’s highest market town. Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain, has many routes to it’s summit, catering for walkers of mixed abilities. For many walkers who visit the area, the Wainwright walks are their challenge accompanied by his hand drawn, illustrated guide books.
